Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn and his wife, Troy, are relaxing at a night club. At the table next to theirs is the party of George Settinger, Marquis of Pastern and Bagott, who has assembled with curiosity, amusement, and disdain to watch Lord Pastern "perform upon the percussion instruments" with the raucous orchestra that has become his latest craze-following fast on yogi, voodoo, Christadelphianism, free love and nudism. Among the group is Lady Pastern, sitting stiffly erect, unseeing and unsmiling; there is her daughter by her first marriage, FTlicitT de Suze, young and attractive and concentrating all her charm on the Honourable Edward Manx; and there is Lord Pastern's niece, Carlisle Wayne, concernedly watching Edward and FTlicitT.
All are waiting for the feature of the floor show. Part of the performance calls for Lord Pastern to fire a "Hot Gun" full of blanks at Rivera and for the latter to slump and fall and be borne out by waiters-a wreath over his heart-playing dead. But something goes wrong... .
Ngaio Marsh, a native New Zealander whose name means “flowering tree” in Maori, was a detective story writer and theatrical producer. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her classic mysteries.
